Carbon footprint
A carbon footprint describes how the manufacture of a product affects climate change by indicating the amount of carbon dioxide emissions per product unit.
Carbon dioxide is the main cause for the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Two principle European carbon measurement approaches
The French method – Bilan Carbone
It accounts for emissions related to energy consumption at the site, to all related transport (including employees), as well as the emissions from the manufacture of the raw materials utilized, waste treatment and the product’s use until the end of its life cycle.
The British Carbon Trust method
It measures a given product’s carbon emissions from energy consumed by its manufacture and related transportation.
